Dorel Juvenile Group (DJG) is issuing a product recall for some Cosco, Maxi-Cosi, and Safety 1st brand child car seats. The recall is being conducted in cooperation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

MSNBC said that almost 800,000 child car seats produced by Dorel Juvenile Group are involved in the recall, citing the NHTSA announcement yesterday. The recall covers booster, convertible, and infant seats made by DJG of Columbus, Indiana, noted MSNBC.

At issue is the harness locking and release button, which does not always return to its locked position, the Dorel recall notice said. This can allow the harness adjustment strap to slip back through the adjuster as a child moves around in the seat and results in a loose harness, increasing the risk of being injured in a crash and the potential for product liability issues.

A defect concerning motor vehicle safety is involved with Cosco, Maxi-Cosi, and Safety 1st brand car seats manufactured from May 1, 2008 through April 30, 2009. The harness adjustment strap can loosen during use which may also be loose around the child and which can increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash,

The models affected were manufactured from May 1, 2008 through April 30, 2009 and include Convertible car seats Alpha Omega, Alpha Omega Elite, Enspira, Priori, Prospect, and Vantage; Infant car seats Mico and OnBoard. DJG said the issue involves models with a “Center Front Adjuster” for the harness, noted MSNBC.

Dorel Juvenile Group announced that it will contact all registered owners and provide them with information on how to obtain a free repair kit for the Defective Product. Consumers may visit the Dorel website to see if their child restraint is affected by this recall “especially if the consumer has not registered the car seat” for information on receiving a free repair kit, and to determine if their model

Until consumers receive the free repair kit they can continue to use their current car seat as directed by the instruction manual, said DJG. Please be sure to adjust the harness adjustment strap snugly each time you put your child in the child restraint as described in the instruction manual, DJG added.

The affected seats should not be returned to the retailer. Consumers with further questions may e-mail the company at consumer@djgusa.com or at its toll-free number, 1-866-623-3139, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. MSNBC said that the manufacturer can also be reached at: harnessadjustment@djgusa.com.

The NHTSA initiated a formal investigation on March 5, 2010, said MSNBC.
