Kradjian Imp Company, of Glendale, California, is recalling its Cedar Brand cheeses for possible for Listeria contamination.
Kradjian Imp Company said it was recently been notified by its supplier that the lot number of this product has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes and is recalling 231 cases of its 22-pound/Cs of Cedar brand Tresse Cheese and 16-ounce Cedar brand Shinglish cheeses.
The Listeria monocytogenes pathogen can lead to the listeriosis infection, which is potentially fatal and can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, abdominal cramps and pain, diarrhea, and nausea, especially in those with weakened immune systems, infants, and the elderly. Vulnerable populations, such as the developing fetus, can suffer serious central nervous system problems.
The infection can prompt premature births, or the death of the fetus via miscarriages and stillbirths. Pregnant women are 20 times likelier to become infected. Listeriosis can also lead to hearing loss or brain damage in newborns, and can lead to neurological effects and cardio respiratory failure in adults.
Tresse Cheese and Shinglish cheese were distributed in Southern California to Mediterranean specialty markets. The recall involves both Cedar brand Shinglish firm, unripened cheese, delivered before November 13, 2011 with the UPC:78546 10000 and Cedar brand Tresse firm, unripened cheese, delivered before November 13, 2011, with UPC 78546 01000.
The recalled cheeses were manufactured and recalled by Fromagerie Marie Kade of Quebec, Canada. Both cheeses are vacuum packed and bear the picture of a green cedar tree, pictured at http://www.fromageriemariekade.com/Produits.htm.
Consumers who have purchased Cedar brand Shinglish or Tresse cheese are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. The firm can be reached, toll-free, at 1.866.825.2633 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, except holidays.
