Miss Bonnie’s Gourmet, LLC, of Winchester, Virginia, is recalling its Miss Bonnie’s Gourmet Classic Cheddar Cheese Spread, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) just announced.
Routine sampling by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services revealed that the recalled cheese has the potential to be contaminated with the dangerous, sometimes fatal, Salmonella pathogen.
The recalled Miss Bonnie’s Gourmet Classic Cheddar Cheese Spread was produced between 8/1/11 and 8/10/11 and bears a “Best By Date†of December 23, 2011 and batch code number 0116206G113.
The recalled Miss Bonnie’s Gourmet Classic Cheddar Cheese Spread is packaged in 8-ounce glass jars and was distributed to Kroger Stores in Roanoke, Virginia; Cincinnati, Ohio; Louisville, Kentucky; and Memphis, Tennessee. No illnesses associated with this recall have been reported, to date.
Most people infected with Salmonella bacteria develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most persons recover without treatment. In some persons, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized.
Salmonella infection may spread from the intestines to the bloodstream and then to other body sites and can cause death unless the person is treated promptly with antibiotics. Older adults, infants, and those with impaired immune systems are more likely to experience severe illness from Salmonella infection.
