About 190 Children’s Coin Purse and Jewelry items, imported by Daiso California LLC of Hayward, California, are being recalled, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) just announced.
The surface paint on the zippers of the coin purses and the clasps on the jewelry contain high levels of <"https://www.yourlawyer.com/practice_areas/toxic_substances">lead. To date, no incidents or injuries have been reported.
A known neurotoxin, lead exposure can cause brain and nervous system damage in children and fetuses. The toxin also causes behavioral and learning problems, slowed growth, hearing problems, headaches, mental and physical retardation, and behavioral and other health problems. Of particular concern is the developing brain because negative influences can have long-lasting effects and can continue well into puberty and beyond. Lead is known to cause cancer and reproductive harm and, in adults, can damage the nervous system. In high doses, lead poisoning can cause seizure, coma, and death. Once poisoned by lead, no organ system is immune; experts agree that there is no safe level of lead.
This recall involves children’s coin purses with rainbow stripes and children’s earrings and necklaces that have blue, pink, red, white, and yellow colored droplets.
“The Coin Purse†and “Mobile Case Coin Purse†are printed on the tag attached to the purse. “Colorful Drop Accessory Bracelet†is printed on the front of the necklace packages and “Colorful Drop Accessory Pierce†is printed on the front of the earring packages. The tag and packaging have the words “Produced for Daiso Japan†on either the front or back.
Children’s Coin Purse and Jewelry items, which were manufactured in China and Korea and were sold at Daiso stores in California and Washington from May 2009 through December 2009 for about $1.50.
The CPSC is advising consumers should immediately take the recalled products away from children and contact Daiso for a full refund. Daiso can be reached toll-free at (888) 580-8841 between 9:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Pacific Time, Monday through Friday or at the firms’ website at www.daisorecall.com.
The CPSC noted that in March 2010, Daiso voluntarily agreed to pay a civil penalty and stop importing children’s products and toys into the United States until the company meets specified CPSC safety requirements.
