The defective chives—lot number 0201111—were distributed in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Alabama, Illinois, and Virginia primarily through retail stores and to one wholesaler in Pennsylvania.
The Chives were distributed in plastic clamshell containers, bags, and twist tie bunches:
• Clamshell Container: 0.25 oz./UPC 0 21985 20005 6
• Clamshell Container: 2/3 oz./UPC 0 21985 10004 2
• 1-pound bags
• ½-ounce twist tie bunches
No other Goodness Gardens Inc. products or lots are included in this recall.
The recall was the result of a routine sampling program conducted by the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection, which revealed that the product lot contained the Listeria bacteria.
It is unlikely that any product still remains in stores but, if so, retailers should remove Chives Lot number 0201111 with date 5/6/11 from store shelves and inventories.
Goodness Gardens, Inc. Customer Service representatives are contacting retailers to ensure the recall is executed swiftly. The company is not aware of any illnesses reported in connection with the recall and stated that it is coordinating closely with regulatory officials.
For susceptible populations, infection with the
Listeria pathogen can cause significant illnesses linked to the central nervous system, the developing fetus, and placenta. Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause Listeriosis, a potentially fatal foodborne Illness that infects about 2,500 people in the U.S., killing 500 each year.
Listeriosis symptoms are high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, nausea, abdominal cramps and pain, and diarrhea. Pregnant women are 20 times likelier to be infected and Listeriosis can kill fetuses, prompt premature births, can lead to hearing loss or brain damage in newborns, and can prompt neurological effects and cardio respiratory failure in adults.
The CPSC urges consumers not to consume chives from the recalled lot and advises consumers who purchased this item to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
