Satur Farms of Cutchogue, New York just issued a food product recall of 88.5 pounds of Satur Farms Cilantro over possible contamination with the <“https://www.yourlawyer.com/practice_areas/food_poisoning”>Salmonella pathogen, said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Typically, contaminated food and water are the traditional routes for the dangerous, sometimes deadly, Salmonella bacteria.
Contamination with the Salmonella pathogen can lead to serious consequences as a result of the Salmonella infection, known as salmonellosis.
The tainted Satur Farms Cilantro was distributed in New York City and Long Island, New York.
The recalled cilantro was distributed to food service customers in ½-pound and 1-pound bulk bags which contained a small white stick-on label with the four-digit lot number 6361.
Although no illnesses have been reported, to date, it is important to bear in mind that the effects of Salmonella poisoning can take some time to manifest following ingestion of a contaminated food product.
As we’ve mentioned, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), note that people infected with Salmonella bacteria usually experience symptoms beginning 12 to 72 hours after becoming contaminated by the pathogen which, in this case would involve consumption of the potentially Salmonella-tainted cilantro.
Salmonellosis symptoms include fever, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea and usually last 4 to 7 days. Most people recover without antibiotic treatment; however, the diarrhea can be very severe, and hospitalization may be required.
The presence of Salmonella was detected by the FDA in a routine test. Satur Farms stated that it conducted independent tests of its cilantro and cilantro seed through Alliant Food Safety Labs; the findings were returned negative for Salmonella. None of the recalled cilantro was shipped to retail markets.
Food service customers who have purchased Satur Farms Cilantro from the lot in question are urged to return it to Satur Farms. Satur Farms can be reached at 1.631.734.4219, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Eastern Daylight Time.
The elderly, infants, and those with impaired immune systems may experience a more serious illness and symptoms. In these patients, the infection may spread from the intestines to the blood stream, and then to other body sites, and can cause death unless the person is treated promptly with antibiotics.
