Class I Recall Issued for Amy’s Kitchen Products Nationwide

A potential health risk has prompted Amy’s Kitchen, Inc. to voluntarily recall over 73,000 cases of products containing organic spinach nationwide. According to a recall alert issued on March 25th, one of Amy’s organic spinach suppliers may have received organic spinach with the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes.

In healthy individuals, this organism may only trigger short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Young children, frail, or elderly people, however, are at risk for serious and sometimes fatal infections. In pregnant women, listeria infections may result in miscarriages and still births.According to the FDA, a Class I recall designation means that the recall involves a “situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”

The recalled products were distributed to stores nationwide in the United States and in Canada, according to the FDA.

“Bullhead and Fort Mohave Smith’s stores were notified of the product recall early evening yesterday,” said Smith’s public affairs representative Marsha Gilford, according to Mohave Daily News. “Employees pulled the product from the shelves today. This is a Class 1 recall, so we also install signs notifying customers of the recall, near where the product is normally sold.”

Walmart Grocery Manager Brain Cole said “Walmart was notified of the recall yesterday and we immediately responded,” Mohave Daily News reports. “Our store carries one of the enchilada products listed on the recall notice, but we did not have any on the shelves made within the affected dates. We’ve removed all of the product as a safety precaution.”
