Health Canada, the Canadian government’s health and safety agency, recently announced the voluntary recall of 17 cough and cold products. The child-resistant caps on the bottles can fail, allowing children to open the bottle and ingest the product.
Novartis Consumer Health Canada Inc., the manufacturer, is conducting the recall of its products.
The ingredients in these liquid cough and cold medicines may be harmful to children and could cause serious adverse health consequences, including death. To date, Health Canada has not received any reports of adverse reactions, but because of the danger posed by the defective caps, Novartis Consumer Health Canada has moved to get these products off retailers’ shelves. The products are available across Canada; the company has asked retailers to immediately stop selling the recalled medicines and return them to the company.
The recalled cough and cold products include five formulas sold under the Jack and Jill brand name, six Triaminic products, three Buckley’s, and one Neo Citran.
