An early morning crash leaves a man dead in Long Island. A 56-year-old Sound Beach man driving a 2007 Ford E150 was headed westbound when he collided with a box truck on Sunrise Highway and Helen Avenue. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene and his 28-year-old male passenger was transported to a hospital for injuries. Police say the driver of the box truck, 25, was unharmed.
Nassau County police are investigating the accident to determine whether or not a medical emergency could have contributed to the deadly crash, Newsday reports. There was no evidence of criminality.
The 2017 Chevrolet box truck was struck by the westbound van when it was in the westbound left turn lane to enter Home Depot. A picture taken of the scene shows a commercial van that collided with a tree. The driver’s side appears to be have taken substantial impact.
After the crash, a stretch of Sunrise Highway was closed for about four hours.
Another horrific crash in Long Island left six people dead. The driver of an SUV, allegedly speeding, swerved across the grassy median on the Long Island Expressway when he came up on slowed traffic in a work zone near Manorville. The SUV continued across the median and struck two other vehicles on the westbound side, killing three people. Among those killed were a couple, 81 and 71, headed to a wedding, and a 29-year-old man who worked as the communications director for Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and was previously a staffer for Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo. The SUV driver, his 10-year-old son and his sister were all killed.
