According to the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC), the CYBEX strollers’ hinge mechanism can cause an amputation of the finger tip, or a laceration to a child when a caregiver is unfolding or opening the stroller. Regal Lager has received one report of a child placing his finger in the stroller’s hinge mechanism, resulting in a finger fracture.
This recall involves Ruby, Onyx and Topaz models of CYBEX umbrella strollers. “CYBEX†is printed on the side of the strollers. The recalled strollers were sold at department and juvenile product stores nationwide between August 2009 and November 2009 for between $140 and $260.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled strollers and contact Regal Lager to receive a free hinge cover retrofit kit. The CYBEX recall is the third stroller recall since November 2009 for amputation and laceration hazards. In November, MacClaren USA, Inc. recalled about a million single and double umbrella strollers after it had received 15 reports of children placing their finger in the stroller’s hinge mechanism, resulting in 12 reports of fingertip amputations in the United States. The MacClaren models affected by that recall included Volo, Triumph, Quest Sport, Quest Mod, Techno XT, TechnoXLR, Twin Triumph, Twin Techno, and Easy Traveller.
Just last week, Graco recalled 1.5 million strollers for the same problem. Graco said it has received seven reports of children placing their fingers in the stroller’s canopy hinge mechanism while the canopy was being opened or closed, resulting in five fingertip amputations and two fingertip lacerations. The strollers models affected by that recall included Graco’s Passage, Alano, and Spree Strollers.
