A recall has been issued on the Eddie Bauer Rocking Wood Bassinet because it poses a suffocation risk to infants who are placed in them.
According to a recall statement from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, released in conjunction with Dorel Juvenile Group, the manufacturer of the item, the action includes 97,000 of these bassinets. The recall was deemed necessary after Dorel received 17 reports of incidents in which the bottom locking mechanism failed to lock because a sprint was not installed. When this happens, the bassinet is allowed to tip to one side, causing an infant in the item to roll to one side and pose a suffocation hazard to small children.
Most of the 17 incidents occurred with children younger than three months of age and in two of those reported incidents, infants suffered breathing difficulties after they had rolled into the sides of the bassinet being recalled.
The statement issued by CPSC in conjunction with Dorel Juvenile Group includes the following product description to help consumers better identify the product included in the recall action:
“The bassinets have a dark brown wooden headboard and footboard and a cotton bassinet that comes in a variety of colors and patterns. “Eddie Bauer” is printed on a metal plate on the bassinet’s footboard. These bassinets have a dial at the base of the footboard that locks and unlocks the rocking motion of the bassinet. Recalled bassinets have the following model numbers: 10632, 10639, 10832, 10835, 10839 and BT021. The model number is located under the mattress, on the top surface of the mattress support board or on the wash and care label.”
The recalled bassinets were sold at Target, Toys R Us, and at Sears stores nationwide, and were also available online at eBay.com and other Web site from December 2007 until January 2011 for about $150. Products designed for use with infants and small children are also commonly sold at second-hand stores or are passed among family members as needs warrant, so these recalled products may have been purchased in other locations or given to new or expecting parents as a gift.
Consumers are being warned to stop using the Eddie Bauer Rocking Wood Bassinet immediately and to contact Dorel to get a free repair kit that’s designed to eliminate the suffocation risk the bassinets currently pose.
