The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning the public of potential health risks with gourmet honey bars and Frito-Lay and Kellogg products. According to the safety alert, Honey Bunchie is recalling a limited number of Honey Bunchies Gourmet Honey Bars containing SunOpta sunflower kernels because the products may be contaminated with the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes.
Eating food tainted with Listeria can lead to serious health problems, particularly in young children, the frail or elderly, or individuals with compromised immune systems. So far, no illnesses have been reported. The recalled products were distributed between August 5, 2015 and March 15, 2016. The Honey Bunchies Gourmet Honey Bar was sold as 1.9 ounce individual bars, containing UPC number 8 66192 00010 1 and best by dates of 12/27/2015 through 10/28/2016. The bars were also available in boxes of 20, UPC number 8 66192 00011 8 and best by dates of 12/27/2015 through 10/28/2016.
Consumers who purchased the recalled honey bars should not eat it, and watch for symptoms of listeriosis over the next 70 days. Symptoms of listeriosis may include high fever, neck stiffness, muscle aches, severe headache, flu-like symptoms, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
In other food recall news, Frito-Lay issued an update on its prior recall of select Rold Gold Tiny Twists, Rold Gold Thins, Rold Gold Sticks and Rold Gold Honey Wheat Braided. The same products are affected, but an update is being issued due to potential contamination with peanut residue, which could lead to an allergic reaction in some consumers. Potential peanut residue also prompted Kellogg Company to recall certain lots of Mother’s, Keebler, Kellogg’s Special K brownies, Murray and Famous Amos snacks and cookies.
