Fitbit is recalling its Force wristband after a number of users complained about skin rashes and irritation. The recently launched product is used to track activity and sleep; users are able to sync this information to their computer or smartphone for review. But for some customers, the product brought about an unwelcome skin reaction.

In a letter posted on Fitbit’s website, CEO and co-founder James Park said that the wristband will no longer be sold. Customers are able to receive a refund for the products at full retail price.

After receiving complaints about skin irritation last month, Fitbit contracted medical experts and independent labs to investigate the issue further. According to Park’s letter, 1.7 percent of users reported sometype of skin irritation. The findings from the researchers indicate that most of the complaints stem from contact dermatitis.

“Some users may be reacting to the nickel present in the surgical grade stainless steel used in the device,” Park said. “Other users are likely experiencing an allergic reaction to the materials used in the strap or the adhesives used to assemble the product.”
