The owner of an adult care home in Williston, Florida, was charged last week with mistreatment of the home’s residents, including failure to provide beds, restraining a resident with handcuffs, and other abuses and crimes.
Priscilla Smith Johnson is charged with neglect of a disabled adult, false imprisonment, aggravated abuse and exploitation, a press release from the Florida Attorney General’s Office revealed, according to the Gainesville Sun.
Authorities allege that Johnson neglected to provide beds for some residents, failed to provide medical services for a resident’s wounds, restrained a disabled adult with handcuffs, and abused a disabled adult, injuring her wrists and causing permanent disfigurement. She is also charged with failing to pay required monthly personal needs allowances to two disabled adult residents, the Gainesville Sun reports.
Johnson was in a Gainesville hospital on Thursday and will be booked into the Alachua County jail upon her release, sheriff Scott Tummond said. Tummond did not know the reason for her hospitalization.
Johnson’s arrest came as the result of a collaborative investigation by the Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit and the Sheriff’s Office. She faces up to 60 years in prison and $40,000 in fines, if convicted, according to the Sun.
The sheriff’s office reports that the home Johnson ran is small, with about 10 residents.
