Fresh Express Incorporated has recalled some 32-ounce packages of Fresh Express Chopped Romaine because they may contain undeclared allergens.
Fresh Express representatives are coordinating with stores to remove the recalled product from store shelves. No other Fresh Express products are included in this recall, according to the company’s recall announcement. No illnesses have been reported.
The recall was undertaken when Fresh Express learned that sealed condiment packets of dressing, croutons and Parmesan cheese used in Fresh Express’s Caesar salads were mistakenly placed in some of the 32-ounce packages of chopped romaine. Ingredients in the individual packets include milk, eggs, wheat and fish, all of which are potential allergens. Though the individual packets are enclosed in another sealed package, Fresh Express issued the recall “to protect the health and well-being of consumers who may be at risk from exposure to undeclared allergens.”
The recalled product is Fresh Express Chopped Romaine, 32-ounce bag, product code G034A06A, Use-By Date of February 19, located in the upper right hand corner on the front of the bag. The UPC code 0 7127926100 3 is located on the reverse side of the bag by the bar code. The recalled chopped romaine was distributed in Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Virginia.
The company says that all Fresh Express products with condiments that may contain allergens are properly labeled in accordance with the law. Fresh Express is coordinating an investigation into this event with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is implementing corrective steps to prevent future occurrences.
Fresh Express advises consumers who have the recalled packaged romaine to discard it. Consumers may obtain a refund from the store where they purchased the packaged romaine or they may contact the Fresh Express Consumer Response Center toll-free at (800) 242-5472 during the hours of 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Eastern Time.
