Cambridge Farms, LLC of Lancaster, Pennsylvania has recalled three brands of frozen corn products because they may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes. The organism can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems.
To date, no illnesses have been reported, according to the recall notice.The products included in the recall are Laura Lynn Frozen Cut Corn (16 and 32 oz. bags), Key Food Frozen Cut Corn (16 oz. bag) and Better Valu Frozen Cut Corn (14 oz. bag). The UPC codes and Best by dates (which are in 2018 for all the recalled frozen corn) can be found in the recall announcement on the Food and Drug Administration website.
The frozen corn products were distributed in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Virginia, New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, Maryland, and Florida. These frozen corn products are sold in supermarkets.
The recall was the result of a routine sampling program by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture. The sampling revealed that the corn purchased at a retail store contained the listeria bacteria. Cambridge Farms recalled all cut corn products that may have been produced using the same lot of cut corn. Cambridge Farms, LLC has ceased the production and distribution of the products. The company is investigating the cause of the problem.
Consumers who have purchased any of the recalled frozen corn products should not consume them. They should return the corn to the place purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions about the recall may call Cambridge Farms at 1-717-945-5178 Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that healthy individuals usually suffer only short-term symptoms from listeria infection. But listeria can cause serious illness in higher risk individuals. Pregnant women, newborns, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems, are at risk for more serious listeria illness, according to the CDC.
Listeriosis symptoms include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. The infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women. The CDC advises anyone who experiences symptoms of listeria infection to seek immediate medical care. Listeriosis is treated with antibiotics.
