The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced that Gallo Meats LLC of Colville, Washington, recalled Sausage, Beef, and Lamb products because they were produced without benefit of inspection.
The recall was subsequently updated to include hot Italian sausage products that may contain undeclared allergens due to potential cross contamination with soy, wheat, fish (anchovies), and milk.
The recall has been designated a Class I, which means this recall represents a health hazard situation in which there exists a reasonable probability that the use of the recalled products will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.
Gallo Meats is recalling approximately 82 pounds of various sausage, beef, and lamb products that were produced without a federal inspection despite that a mark of inspection was applied to the products, the FSIS announced. The hot Italian sausage products were recalled over undeclared allergens, due to potential cross contamination issues.
The Italian sausage, beef and lamb items were produced on a variety of dates between April 20 and July 27, 2016 and include the following:
- 12-16 oz. cryovac packages of “Hot Italian Sausage” bearing a pack date of 04-20-16.
- 12-16 oz. cryovac packages of “Ground Lamb” bearing a pack date of 06-07-16.
- 12-16 oz. cryovac packages of “Beef Flank Steak” bearing a pack date of 07-22-16 or 07-27-16.
The recalled Gallo Meats products bear establishment number “EST. 09334” inside the USDA mark of inspection and were sold to consumers in Washington state.
The problem was discovered on September 14, 2016 when FSIS inspectors observed products that showed the USDA mark of inspection that was not produced during the FSIS inspection.
To date, there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these recalled Gallo Meats products. Consumers who have purchased these recalled Gallo Meats products are urged not to consume them. The recalled Gallo Meats products should be discarded or returned to the place of purchase.
