According to a recall notice from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Harbor Freight Tools is recalling its cordless drills due to fire and burn hazards. The Drill Master 18-Volt Cordless Drills contain an internal switching mechanism that can become jammed in the “on” position; this can result in overheating, which could cause fire and burn hazards. The recall affects about 1.7 million units.
There have been 25 reports of drill switch overheating. In six cases, there were reports of burns to the hands and fingers. Five reports cited minor property damage.
The recalled drills were sold in stores around the country and online at Harbor Freight’s website between May 2011 and September 2015 for about $35. The products contain item number 68239, which was sold individually, and item number 68287 which was sold as part of a kit. The drills, which are black with a red switch, came with an 18 volt rechargeable battery pack.
