J.J. Fuds, Inc. Pet Food Recalled – Listeria Contamination

Valparaiso, Indiana-based pet food manufacturer, J.J. Fuds, has recalled a specific lot of its J.J. Fuds Chicken Tender Chunks Pet Food over potential contamination with the dangerous, sometimes deadly, Listeria monocytogenes pathogen, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The Listeria pathogen is unique because it thrives in colder temperatures, such as those found in refrigerated environments. Listeria also has an unusually long incubation period—up to 70 days—according to experts. The pathogen also well tolerates heat and dry temperatures, adding further challenges to the pathogen’s eradication and length to expected reporting time frames.

Listeriosis, the food borne disease caused by the Listeria pathogen, is dangerous and can be deadly, causing serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may suffer short-term symptoms, such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. In pregnant women, Listeriosis may result in miscarriage, stillbirth, or birth of a baby suffering from the infection. Pregnant women are about 20 times likelier than others to be infected, with about one-third of all Listeriosis cases occurring during pregnancy. Listeriosis may also kill fetuses, prompt premature births, and may lead to hearing loss or brain damage in newborns and neurological effects and cardio respiratory failure in adults.

Animals who develop listeriosis may suffer symptoms similar to those seen in humans.

The recalled J.J. Fuds Premium Natural Blends Chicken Tender Chunks Pet Food was distributed in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois to wholesale and retail customers. The product, which was sold in 5-pound bags, bears a batch ID code (manufactured date) of 5/5/14 and the UPC number 654592-345935 printed on the back of the individual plastic bag or on the master case label. The recalled product is a frozen, raw poultry product (see “Safe Handling” Instructions on package) and has a shelf life of one year when kept frozen.

The recall was a result of a routine sampling program by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in which a positive test for Listeria monocytogenes was received. To date, J.J. Fuds has not received reports of dogs, or humans, experiencing nausea and diarrhea that may be associated with the recalled J.J. Fuds Premium Natural Blends Chicken Tender Chunks Pet Food.

The recalled J.J. Fuds Premium Natural Blends Chicken Tender Chunks Pet Food should not be sold or fed to pets. Pet owners who are in possession of the affected product should return the recalled pet food to the retailer of purchase for a refund and proper disposal.
