Jeni’s Ice Cream Recalled Due to Positive Listeria Test

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams of Ohio is recalling all of its frozen treats after a sample tested positive for listeria bacteria, Associated Press reports. The recall is similar to one recently issued by Blue Bell of Texas, whose ice cream products were linked to 10 listeria illnesses, including three deaths, in four states. The Nebraska Department of Agriculture tested a sample from a Whole Foods in Lincoln, Nebraska.

The frozen treats were distributed to retail outlets and sold online at jenis.com, and all bear the brand name “Jeni’s”. No illnesses are currently linked to the recall, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Currently, there is no evidence indicating that the recalls are related, a US. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) spokesman said. “At this time, the FDA does not believe that the finding of listeria in one sample of Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams is related to the outbreak and recall associated with Blue Bell Ice Cream,” said spokesman Jeff Ventura, according to AP. “We are continuing to investigate both situations and will provide updated information to consumers as we learn more.”

Listeriosis, the illness caused by listeria bacteria, can be life-threatening in the elderly, newborn infants, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches and gastrointestinal symptoms. Listeria often comes from soil and water. Because the bacteria grow well in refrigeration, it is difficult for facilities to get rid of contamination. Listeria is commonly found in processed meats, unpasteurized cheeses and unpasteurized milk and sometimes other foods. In 2011, listeria-tainted cantaloupes were linked to 30 deaths.
