Last week, we wrote that Jonathans Sprouts of Rochester, Massachusetts issued a recall over is conventional alfalfa sprout products because of potential <"https://www.yourlawyer.com/practice_areas/food_poisoning">Salmonella contamination. Now, the firm is reporting that it is upgrading its recall of conventional alfalfa sprout product with a specific sell-by date to include all of its alfalfa products, conventional and organic, with all sell-by dates, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) just announced.
Six sprout products are involved and are sold in plastic containers that are approximately 4-inch cubes:
• Jonathan’s 4-ounce Alfalfa Sprouts: All sell-by dates
• Jonathan’s 4-ounce Organic Alfalfa Sprouts: All sell-by dates
• Jonathan’s 4-ounce Alfalfa with Radish Sprouts: All sell-by dates
• Jonathan’s 4-ounce Organic Alfalfa with Radish Sprouts: All sell-by dates
• Jonathan’s 4-ounce Gourmet Sprouts: All sell-by dates
• Jonathan’s 4-ounce Alfalfa with Dill Sprouts: All sell-by dates
• Jonathan’s 8-ounce Alfalfa Sprouts: All sell-by dates
• Jonathan’s Organic Sprout Salad: All sell by dates
The sprouts were sold at A&P, Grand Union, Stop & Shop, Shaws, Hannaford, Donnelans, Foodmaster, Truccis, and Roche Brothers.
Also, the following were distributed in bulk to food service establishments such as restaurants and are involved in this recall:
• Jonathan’s 5-pound Bulk Alfalfa in waxed 18-inch by 11-inch cardboard cartons: All codes
• Jonathan’s 5-pound Bulk Organic Alfalfa Sprouts in waxed 18-inch by 11-inch cardboard cartons: All codes
• Jonathan’s 4-pound Bulk Alfalfa Sprouts in bags 2-pound bags in a 13-inch by 9-inch by six-inch cardboard carton: All codes
The products containing alfalfa sprouts were distributed in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. The product being recalled was identified through routine sampling as part of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Microbiological Data Program.

Salmonella contamination can lead to the bacterial infection Salmonellosis, which usually last 4-7 days. Symptoms include fever, abdominal cramps and diarrhea between 12 and 72 hours after infection. Very young and old people and those with weakened immune systems can suffer severe illness and, in the worst cases possible, death, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
