The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced two recalls of children’s products over violation of the lead standard. One of the recalls involves cribs and other furniture made by Munire Furniture Inc. that were implicated in the lead poisoning of a child.
According to the CPSC, Munire Furniture Inc, of Piscataway, New Jersey is recalling bout 3,000 Newport Rubbed Black 4-in-1 Cribs and 6,000 Matching Furniture Pieces because the red paint underneath the black finish paint on some cribs and matching furniture exceeds federal lead limits. Munire has received one report of a child ingesting the paint; the child was diagnosed with lead poisoning.
The recalled cribs and furniture, which were made in Indonesia, are made of wood and have a rubbed black finish. Only the “Newport Rubbed Black†cribs and matching furniture manufactured in Indonesia between April 2006 and November 2008 are included in this recall. The model number, date, and country of manufacture are printed on the label attached to the side panel of the crib and the date of manufacture is on the back panel of the furniture.
The following items are included in the recall: 7900/Newport Lifetime Crib, 7918/Hutch for Combo and Double Dresser, 7915/Mirror, 7908/Combo, 7902/Nightstand, 7907/Conversion Kit for Lifetime Crib, 7905/Five-Drawer Dresser, 7929/Armoire, 7975/Guardrail for Lifetime Crib, 7906/Double Dresser, 7914/Bookcase, and 7901/Newport Olde World Crib. The recalled cribs and furniture pieces were sold as specialty furniture stores nationwide from April 2006 through November 2008 for about $600 for the crib between $700 and $1,000 for the matching furniture pieces; additional accessories sold for about $170.

Exposure to lead in children can cause brain and nervous system damage, behavioral and learning problems, slowed growth, hearing problems, headaches, mental and physical retardation, and behavioral and other health problems.
In the second CPSC announcement, manufacturer Woodstock Percussion Inc. of Shokan, New York has recalled about 2,800 Calypso Steel Drums because the surface paint on the recalled toy drums contains excessive levels of lead, violating the federal lead paint standard. The recalled Woodstock Percussion Calypso Drum is made of steel and comes with two wooden drum sticks and a wooden stand. The sides of the drums are painted red and the drum pan is painted black with silver markings indicating the location of notes.
Each rim is stamped with a #5 or #6; however, not all Woodstock Percussion Calypso Steel Drums stamped with a #5 are affected by this recall. The Woodstock Percussion Calypso Steel Drums were made in Trinidad and sold via mail order catalogues, Websites, and retail stores nationwide from December 2006 through December 2007 for between $50 and $100. The CPSC is advising consumers to immediately take the recalled steel drum away from children and return it to Woodstock Percussion for a replacement drum and a $5 credit or payment. Consumers can contact Woodstock Percussion toll-free at (866) 543-2848 anytime, by e-mail at [email protected], or by visiting the firm’s Website at www.woodstockpercussion.com
