Listeria Prompts Stop N Shop to Recall Dips

Giant Food LLC and Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. LLC—popular grocery chains—just announced that a voluntary recall of frozen artichoke and spinach dips has been initiated over concerns that the food products could be contaminated with <"https://www.yourlawyer.com/practice_areas/food_poisoning">Listeria monocytogenes, Business Week just reported.

The Stop & Shop frozen dip being recalled is packaged in an eight-ounce container with the UPC code: 6 8826702988 2. The Giant Food dip being recalled is packaged in an eight-ounce container and has the UPC code: 6 8826702988 2.

Giant Foods said, to date, it has not received any reports of illness associated with its dip product and that consumers can obtain a full return by bringing their purchase receipt to a Giant Foods store, said Business Week. Landover, Maryland-based Giant Foods has stores in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, and the District of Columbia.

Stop & Shop, based in Quincy, Massachusetts, owns and operates stores in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, New York, and New Jersey, according to Business Week.

Listeriosis, the food borne disease caused by the Listeria pathogen, is dangerous and can be deadly, causing serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may suffer short-term symptoms, such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. In pregnant women, Listeriosis can result in miscarriage, stillbirth, or birth of a baby suffering from the infection.

Pregnant women are about 20 times likelier than others to be infected, with about one-third of all Listeriosis cases occurring during pregnancy. Listeriosis can kill fetuses, prompt premature births, and can lead to hearing loss or brain damage in newborns and neurological effects and cardio respiratory failure in adults.
