The Listeria contamination was discovered through routine testing conducted by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection.
Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease. Healthy people rarely contract listeriosis; however, listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, and nausea. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with weakened immune systems, such as infants, the elderly and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy. Individuals concerned about an illness should contact a health care provider.
Listeria is responsible for an estimated 2,500 illnesses in the United States annually, with about 200 in every 1,000 cases resulting in death, or some 500 fatalities each year. Listeria infection can take days, even weeks, to develop and can present in anything from a mild flu-like illness to meningitis and septicemia.
So far, no illnesses have been associated with the recalled Rushing Waters Fisheries products.
This recall involves smoked trout spread labeled lot number 00694 with a sell-by date of Dec 13, and smoked salmon spread labeled with lot 50012 with a sell-by date of Dec 11. Lot numbers and dates are on the bottom of the container. Affected smoked fish spreads were sold in eight-ounce containers and 4.5-pound round plastic tubs in southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois.
Only the smoked fish spreads with the matching lots and dates are being recalled; no other Rushing Waters Fisheries products are included in the recall.
Consumers who have these products in their refrigerator can discard them or return them to the place of purchase for a refund. For more information contact Rushing Waters at 1-800-378-7088.
