The Masago (Capelin Roe) was distributed to retail stores in Los Angeles, California; Baltimore, Maryland; Atlanta, Georgia; and Mexico.
The Masago (Capelin Roe) was packed in two-pound (907g) increments in plastic containers with a white label that bears Japanese and English writing and that also bears the words “Yamaya USA, Inc.†as the brand. Although no illnesses have been reported, to date, it is important to bear in mind that food borne pathogens can take some time to manifest with illness symptoms, particularly Listeriosis—the infection caused by the Listeria bacteria—as this germ can incubate for up to two months.
The recall was the result of a microbiological sampling of the facility by the FDA, which revealed that the finished products contained the bacteria. The company stopped production and distribution of the Masago (Capelin Roe) and Yamaya continues its investigation into the potential contamination.
Consumers who purchased the recalled Yamaya Masago (Capelin Roe) are urged to return the recalled product to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact Yamaya at 1.310.325.1710, Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Pacific Standard Time (PST).
The Listeria monocytogenes pathogen can lead to the listeriosis infection, which is a potentially fatal infection that can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, abdominal cramps and pain, diarrhea, and nausea, especially in those with weakened immune systems, infants, and the elderly.
Pregnant women are 20 times likelier to become infected and other vulnerable populations, such as the developing fetus, can suffer serious central nervous system problems. The infection can also prompt premature births, or the death of the fetus via miscarriages and stillbirths. Listeriosis can also lead to hearing loss or brain damage in newborns, and can prompt neurological effects and cardio respiratory failure in adults.
