Modern Products, Inc. is initiating a recall of products manufactured with HVP (Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein) supplied by Basic Food Flavors of Las Vegas, Nevada, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) just announced. As we have been writing, the HVP has the potential to be contaminated with <"https://www.yourlawyer.com/practice_areas/food_poisoning">Salmonella.

We have been following the growing number of recalls linked to Salmonella contamination at Basic Food Flavors Inc. in Nevada. As of our last report, recalls had exceeded 100 products; however, Bloomberg News, citing a Consumers Union scientist, said the number could top 10,000 products.

The FDA announced it is actively investigating findings of Salmonella Tennessee in hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP) manufactured by Basic Food Flavors. HVP is a flavor enhancer used in a wide variety of processed food products and that is also often blended with other spices to make seasonings used in or on foods. According to FDA’s release, it conducted an investigation after a customer of an FDA-regulated firm reported finding Salmonella in the HVP ingredient. This resulted in the subsequent recall of the contaminated products. A complete list of affected products can be found at http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/HVPCP/.

According to the FDA, consumption of products containing Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail, or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms) endocarditis and arthritis.

To date, no illnesses have been associated with any Modern Products seasonings and, random samples covering all HVP batches of concern were sent to an independent laboratory for testing; all results came back negative. To ensure consumer safety, the FDA’s recommendation is to recall products made with the potentially contaminated HVP.

Recalled Modern Products items were distributed nationwide and sold in retail stores. A complete list of these recalled products can be accessed on the FDA’s Website at: http://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ucm206528.htm Modern Products, Inc. can be reached by telephone at 1-262-242-2400 or email at modernfearn@aol.com for information on what to do with the recalled product. Codes on bottles/jars are printed along the base of the jar, cartons/boxes will have the code embossed along the top of the package.
