The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G) just announced it is voluntarily expanding a prior recall to include veterinary and some specialized dry pet food over concerns the pet food has the potential to be contaminated with <"https://www.yourlawyer.com/practice_areas/food_poisoning">Salmonella. To date, no Salmonella-related illnesses have been reported. Salmonella tainted pet foods and snacks can sicken animals, as well as consumers who have handled the contaminated food.
The expanded recall includes all dry sizes and varieties, all UPC codes, and “Best-By†dates 01Jul10 through 01Dec11 for Iams Veterinary Dry formulas, Eukanuba Naturally Wild, and Eukanuba Pure. Also Eukanuba Custom Care Sensitive Skin in all dry sizes, all UPC codes, and “Best-By†dates 01Jul10 through 01Dec11 are involved.
The affected products are sold in veterinary clinics and specialty pet retailers in the United States and Canada. No canned food, biscuits/treats, or supplements are affected by this announcement. A full listing of UPC codes can be found at www.iams.com.
The products are made in a single, specialized facility. In cooperation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), P&G determined that some products made at this facility have the potential for Salmonella contamination and, as a precautionary measure, P&G is recalling all products made at this facility.
Consumers who purchased the recalled foods should discard them. People handling dry pet food can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with surfaces exposed to this product. Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.
Pets with Salmonella infections may have decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. If left untreated, pets may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Infected, but otherwise healthy, pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

Previously, we wrote that two specific lots of Iams prescription cat food were recalled by P&G because they might be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria. The following Iams products, available by prescription via veterinary clinics throughout the U.S., are included in this recall: Iams Veterinary Formulas Feline Renal 5.5 lbs, Lot Code 01384174B4, UPC Code 0 19014 21405 and Iams Veterinary Formulas Feline Renal 5.5 lbs, Lot Code 01384174B2, UPC Code 0 19014 21405 1. Lot codes can be found in the lower right corner on the back of the bag. According to the recall notice, a FDA analysis identified a positive result on these lot codes; however, no illnesses have been associated with these recalled Iams products, to date.
