Nano Well-being Health Inc. has issued a voluntarily recall of its Super Arthgold arthritis supplement because of hidden ingredients that could lead to potentially-fatal adverse reactions. Super Arthgold is a dietary supplement used for joint pain and arthritis. It touts an “all-natural source formula” that lists ingredients such as the organic compound MSM, a Chinese herb called Angelica sinensis and white peony. A laboratory analysis conducted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) however, has found that the supplement contains several hidden ingredients that make the product an unapproved drug.
The lots being recalled include: lot L1P1-6100/Expiration date June 25, 2016 and lot L1P2-6000/Expiration date September 16, 2016. Super Arthgold is packaged in bottles of 120 capsules of 500 mg, and was distributed to wholesalers nationwide.
An FDA press release issued April 24th states that the agency found three hidden ingredients when they tested the product: the muscle relaxant chlorzoxazone and two nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), diclofenac and indomethacin. The release states that “Use of this product containing the undeclared drug ingredients has a reasonable probability of resulting in fatal adverse events in consumers and patients with underlying illnesses, including known allergy to the hidden ingredients, cardiac, gastrointestinal, hepatic, and renal conditions as well as patients who recently undergone cardiac bypass graft surgery.”
The undeclared NSAIDS are dangerous for consumers who are not supposed to take them, such as those who are at increased risk for heart disease and gastrointestinal problems. These consumers may use Super Arthgold thinking that it is a safe alternative, when in actuality they are receiving the medication they want to avoid. Furthermore, the FDA says, the fact that NSAIDs are not listed means that consumers could inadvertently overdose on the medications by taking other products that contain NSAIDs. This could lead to NSAID adverse events, including heart attack, stroke, congestive heart failure, renal toxicity and bleeding, ulceration, or perforation of the stomach or intestines.
Anyone who thinks they have experienced problems related to Super Arthgold should contact their physician or healthcare provider. Signs of adverse events may include internal bleeding, which may manifest as unusually dark stools or urine, stomach pain or increased bruising.
Consumers, distributors and retailers who have the recalled supplement should stop using it and return it to the place of purchase, the FDA says.
