Tens of thousands of <“https://www.yourlawyer.com/practice_areas/product_liability”>Freestanding Steel Outdoor Fireplaces are being recalled in the United States and Canada, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada (HC), just announced. The wood burning fireplace recall involves about 20,000 defective fireplaces in the U.S. and 400 in Canada.
The recalled fireplaces were manufactured in China by Sunjoy Industries Group Limited, of Steubenville, Ohio, and were sold at Lowe’s stores, nationwide, from March 2010 through November 2010 for about $300.
The decorative bronze powder coat finish on the fireplace chimney can ignite during use, posing a fire hazard to consumers. To date, Sunjoy has received 14 reports of the chimney’s decorative powder coat finish catching fire, resulting in one report of melted siding. No injuries have been reported.
This recall of wood burning fireplaces involves “Garden Treasures Living” steel outdoor fireplaces with a bronze finished chimney and slate colored accents. The wood burning fireplace is approximately 24 inches deep by 35 inches wide by 57 inches tall and has two glass doors and a tile back interior. Item number 0027705 and model number L-OF082PST-3 are printed on the front page of the product’s instruction manual. No other “Garden Treasures Living” brand outdoor fireplaces are included in this recall.
The CPSC and HC are advising consumers to immediately stop using the fireplace and contact Sunjoy to obtain a free replacement chimney and chimney cap. The agencies also note that it s illegal to resell or to attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.
