Chrysler is recalling 108,429 Dodge Ram Diesel Pick-Ups from model years 2007 and 2008 for fire risks, said the Auto Channel.  The <"https://www.yourlawyer.com/practice_areas/product_liability">defective Dodge Ram trucks are being recalled in order to correct a flaw in an engine-compartment pad that can cause a fire, according to the Post-Gazette.com.  According to the report, the recall involves Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups with a 6.7-liter diesel engine, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Chrysler said the recall will begin this month, reported the Auto Channel, adding that 14 complaints have been received of engine fires in Dodge Rams, which might be related to the flaw and recall.  Citing an official NHTSA Recall Notice, the Auto Channel provided the following recall information:

  • Vehicle Make/Model/Model Year:  Dodge/ Ram 2500/2007-2008 and Dodge/Ram 3500/2007-2008
  • Manufacturer:  Chrysler LLC
  • Manufacturer’s Report Date:  December 4, 2008
  • NHTSA Campaign ID Number:  08V641000
  • NHTSA Action Number:  N/A
  • Component: Engine and Engine Cooling
  • Engine:  Diesel
  • Potential Number of Units Affected: 108,429

According to the NHTSA Recall Notice Summary, the recalled trucks with a 6.7-liter diesel engine are equipped with a silencer pad that can sag, making contact with the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler, which can cause an engine compartment fire, said the Auto Channel.  The Auto Channel reported that to correct the problem, dealers will add a bracket to support the engine compartment silencer pad that is next to the EGR cooler, which should remedy the issue.

Consumers can contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403 or the NHTSA’s Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or can access www.SaferCar.gov.

In 2006, the NHTSA launched an investigation of DaimlerChrysler AG’s Dodge Durango sport-utility vehicle after receiving reports of fires occurring beneath the driver’s seat.  In that situation, the NHTSA said that there were reports of five vehicle fires, with three taking place when the vehicle was parked and with the ignition switch in the “off” position.  The cars involved were equipped with a power driver seat adjustment.  In that case, 15,381 vehicles with model years 2001 through 2003 were affected by the investigation that did not have power seat adjusters.  The company sold 362,531 Durangos from October 2000 through September 2003.
