Purity Cosmetics of San Jose, California is recalling its 100% Pure Fruit Pigmented Cocoa Plum Eye Shadow due to bacterial contamination, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) just announced.
Lot # 11B1 of Purity Cosmetics’ Pure Fruit Pigmented Cocoa Plum Eye Shadow was found to contain the bacteria Pseudomonas Luteola (P. luteola). This bacteria can lead to peritonitis, cellulitis, and bacteremia, said the FDA.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) have also reported that P. luteola has led to pancreatic abscess, prosthetic valve endocarditis, granulomatous hepatitis, peritonitis, and the need for cardiac surgery or the need for indwelling vascular catheters. According to NIH findings, the spectrum of diseases caused by P. luteola can be expected to broaden.
Meanwhile, Purity Cosmetics’ potentially contaminated Pure Fruit Pigmented Cocoa Plum Eye Shadow was produced at Radical Cosmetics, which is located in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Radical Cosmetics is an independent, 3rd-party contract lab hired by Purity Cosmetics, but that is a separate entity from Purity Cosmetics.
Purity Cosmetics stated that other random products that were tested and that had been produced at its own facility—owned and operated by Purity Cosmetics—were found to be safe and free of any bacteria.
Purity Cosmetics also said that it is devastated over its 3rd-party contractor’s potential contamination of its products, noting that the recalled Pure Fruit Pigmented Cocoa Plum Eye Shadow was neither produced nor filled at Purity Cosmetic facilities, adding that it is looking into all of its 3rd-party contractors.
Purity Cosmetics also stated that it began shipping Pure Fruit Pigmented Cocoa Plum Eye Shadow on or after March 7th, 2011. Up to 300 units of this item were distributed to retail stores in the following states: California, Florida, New York, Indiana, Texas, Illinois, Oregon, Minnesota, Virginia, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Nevada, and Tennessee.
Consumers in possession of the recalled Purity Cosmetics’ Pure Fruit Pigmented Cocoa Plum Eye Shadow are advised to discontinue its use immediately and to contact Xor Vue, the regulatory specialist at Purity Cosmetics, at 1.415.814.9788, extension 126, or by email at xor@puritycosmetics.com.
