Flying Food Group, LLC, of Lawrenceville, Georgia, just issued a recall of 204 pounds of a ready-to-eat chicken wraps and plates that may be contaminated with the <"https://www.yourlawyer.com/topics/overview/listeria">Listeria monocytogenes pathogen, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced.
This recall has been deemed a Class I by the FSIS which means that this is a health hazard situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of the recalled product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death. The following products are subject to recall:
• 8.4-ounce packages of “STARBUCKS CHIPOTLE CHICKEN WRAPS Bistro Box”
• 6.3-ounce packages of “STARBUCKS CHICKEN & HUMMUS Bistro Box”
The recalled ready-to-eat chicken products have an “Enjoy by 071511” date on the bottom left corner of the package and bear the establishment number “P-34373” inside the USDA mark of inspection. The products were produced on July 13, 2011, and were distributed to coffee shops in Georgia and Alabama.
The potential contamination was discovered as a result of microbiological testing conducted by FSIS on a sample of chicken used in these products. FSIS and the company have received no reports of illnesses associated with consumption of these products, to date; however, it is important to note that the effects of Listeria poisoning can take some time to manifest.
Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, which is potentially fatal. Listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, abdominal cramps and pain, diarrhea, and nausea. Listeriosis can also cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with weakened immune systems, such as infants, the elderly, and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy.
Pregnant women are 20 times likelier to be infected with listeriosis, which can kill fetuses, causing miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women. Listeriosis can also prompt premature births, can lead to hearing loss or brain damage in newborns, and can prompt neurological effects and cardio respiratory failure in adults. For susceptible populations, infection with the Listeria pathogen can also cause significant illnesses linked to the central nervous system, including in the developing fetus. Listeriosis infects about 2,500 people in the U.S., killing 500 each year.
