Consumption of food contaminated with Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses. While most individuals recover in three to five days without medical intervention, the infection can be life-threatening to young children; the elderly; and those with compromised immune systems, such as those with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy. The most common manifestations of salmonellosis are diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within eight to 72 hours. Additional symptoms may include chills, headache, nausea, and vomiting that can last up to seven days. Consumers with any of these symptoms should contact their physician.

To date, there have been no reports of illness in connection with the recalled items.

For more information on Salmonella, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) recommends the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) website.

Orval Kent
Orval Kent is voluntarily recalling 23 of its products as a precautionary measure, according to the FDA.

A total of 43,814 pounds of Orval Kent products were recalled, which were distributed at retail stores nationwide. The Orval Kent products contain fresh cilantro produced and distributed by EpicVeg, Inc. of Lompoc, California. EpicVeg, Inc. issued the notice to recall one lot of cilantro with the UPC code 033383801049 and lot 6127R on November 3, 2010, which has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. EpicVeg, Inc. distributed the cilantro to Field Fresh Foods, a produce supplier to Orval Kent.

Consumers who have recently purchased the items should not consume the products and should return the products to the store of purchase for a full refund or replacement. A complete list of recalled items can be accessed here.

Consumers with questions may contact Orval Kent, toll-free, at 800-544-1246 from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Central Standard time. Recall Coordinator Bill Schwartz can be emailed at william.schwartz@orvalkent.com.

APPA Fine Foods
APPA Fine Foods, a Corona, California is recalling approximately 7,325 pounds of ready-to-eat chicken pasta salad products because they contain cilantro that may be contaminated with Salmonella, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) just announced. The recall is a Class 1, which represents a health hazard situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.

The recall involves 12-ounce packages of “Spicy THAI STYLE PASTA SALAD” that was produced on October 25, 27, and 29, 2010. The packages bear the establishment number “P-21030” within the USDA Mark of Inspection, as well as a “USE BY” date of October 31 or November 1-6, 2010.

FSIS learned of the problem from the company as a result of an ongoing investigation into a cilantro recall issued by an FDA-inspected establishment. FSIS has received no reports of illnesses associated with the consumption of these ready-to-eat chicken pasta salad products.

The ready-to-eat chicken pasta salad products were distributed to distribution centers that sell to a single retail chain in California. When available, the retail distribution list(s) will be posted on FSIS’ website at: http://www.fsis.usda.gov/FSIS_Recalls/Open_Federal_Cases/index.asp.

Consumer with questions about the recall may contact the company’s Insurance Coordinator, Denise McGrath, at (951) 278-2772 ext. 8113.

FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers.

Consumers with food safety questions can “Ask Karen,” the FSIS virtual representative available 24 hours a day at AskKaren.gov. The toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline 1-888-MPHotline (1-888-674-6854) is available in English and Spanish and can be reached from l0:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) Monday through Friday. Recorded food safety messages are available 24 hours a day.

In June I had a car accident and I was hesitant to find a lawyer but my family urged me to. I searched the web and asked some co workers for any recommendations. One of my workers said the name Waichman found the web site of Parker Waichman and I called them. The woman who answered the phone was informative and compassionate. By that evening a representative from the law firm was at my home and answered all of my questions. With in the next few days I was contacted by several individual from the firm including a Nurse who continues to contact me on a regular basis to see how my recovery is progressing. I am happy my family convinced me to retain an attorney, I have received hundreds of papers from my insurance company and if I had to sort them out I would be lost.
