Andrew Williamson Fresh Produce is voluntarily recalling one lot of its organic grape tomatoes, which were sold under the Limited Edition® and Fresh & Easy labels, said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The grape tomatoes are being recalled over a possible health risk from the dangerous Salmonella pathogen.
One clamshell of Limited Edition organic grape tomatoes tested positive for Salmonella in a random sample that was collected and tested by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in Michigan, the FDA said. Andrew Williamson Fresh Produce is collaborating with regulatory officials to inform consumers about this recall. Meanwhile, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled grape tomatoes; however, it is important to note that the effects of Salmonella poisoning can take some time to present with symptoms.
The recalled organic grape tomatoes are sold in 10.5-ounce plastic “clam shell†containers containing UPC 033383655925, which is located on the front of the package and below the barcode. The containers also have the words “LIMITED EDITION†and “Product of Mexico†printed on the label. The recalled organic grape tomatoes are also sold in 7-ounce plastic “clam shell†containers with barcode 20025465; this produce is marketed under the “Fresh & Easy†brand.
The potentially contaminated, organic grape tomatoes were distributed to 18 U.S. states: Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, as well as the two Canadian Provinces of British Columbia and Ontario.
The voluntary recall only involves Limited Edition and Fresh & Easy labeled organic grape tomatoes and does not involve any other Limited Edition or Fresh & Easy branded produce items.
Consumers in possession of the recalled product with UPC code 033383655925 or barcode 20025465 should not consume the recalled tomatoes and should discard them. As an added safety measure, retailers are encouraged to check their inventories and store shelves to confirm that the defective tomatoes are no longer available for purchase. Andrew Williamson Fresh Produce customer service representatives are contacting retailers to confirm that the recalled product is removed from commerce. Andrew Williamson Fresh Produce can be reached at 1.619.661.6000, Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Pacific Time (PT), or by email to info@andrew-williamson.com.
Foodborne pathogens can be dangerous, sometimes deadly, leaving sufferers with food poisoning symptoms that range from gastrointestinal upsets to serious life-long health issues. Consumption of food contaminated with Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses. Salmonella infections can be life threatening, especially to those with weak immune systems, such as infants, the elderly, and persons with HIV infection or who are undergoing chemotherapy.
The most common manifestations of salmonellosis are diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 6 to 72 hours. Additional symptoms may be chills, headache, nausea, and vomiting that can last up to seven days. The illness usually lasts four to seven days. In some patients, however, the illness becomes so severe that hospitalization is required.
