Salmonella Prompts Recall of Clover Sprout Products

Sprouters Northwest, Inc. of Kent, Washington, just issued a recall of its clover and clover mix products because they have the potential to be contaminated with <"https://www.yourlawyer.com/practice_areas/food_poisoning">Salmonella, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) just announced.

Sprouters Northwest initiated the recall January 1st after learning that a few cases of Salmonella might be linked to sprouts. The recalled clover products were distributed in Washington State, Oregon, Idaho, and Alaska in retail chains and through wholesale distribution, and includes the following products, which all have “best by” dates of 1/16/11 and earlier:

Clover Sprouts:
• 4-ounce containers: UPC 8 15098 00201 6
• 5-ounce containers: UPC 0 33383 70235 3
• 1-pound bags: UPC 0 79566 12351 5
• 2-pound trays: UPC 0 79566 12362 1

Clover Onion Sprouts
• 4-ounce containers: UPC 0 79566 12361 4
• 5-ounce containers: UPC 0 79566 12361 4

Deli Sprouts
• 4-ounce containers: UPC 8 79566 12305 4
• 5-ounce containers: UPC 0 33383 70267 4

Spicy Sprouts
• 4-ounce containers: UPC 8 15098 00202 3

Brocco Sandwich Sprouts
• 4-ounce containers: UPC 8 15098 00028 9

Production of these products has been suspended while FDA and the company continue their investigation as to the source of the problem. Consumers who have purchased these clover-based products are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund and may also contact the company at 1.253.872.0577, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis.

Meanwhile, we just wrote that a Salmonella outbreak linked to alfalfa sprouts was expanded to include all of Tiny Greens’ alfalfa sprouts over the potential for contamination. The expanded recall now includes all products containing alfalfa sprouts on the market with lot numbers from 305 through 348 and with sell-by dates from December 16 to 29.
