Security lights sold at The Home Depot have been recalled for a shock hazard, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) just announced.
About 7,800 Motion Security Lights are involved in the recall. The defective Motion Security Lights were manufactured in China by HeathCo LLC, of Bowling Green, Kentucky and sold exclusively at The Home Depot Stores from September 2011 through April 2012. The security lights retailed for about $30.
Internal wiring can be damaged during installation, bulb replacement, or adjustment, which poses an electric shock hazard. To date, no incidents or injuries have been reported.
The recalled Heath®/Zenith 270° Motion Security Lights bear model number SL-5414-WH. The defective light was meant to replace a standard outdoor, wall-mounted light fixture and is designed to turn on when motion is detected at night. The Motion Security Lights are constructed with two, cone-shaped light bulb receptacles that are attached to a round mounting plate. A small, rectangular motion sensor is attached to the mounting plate, between the light bulb receptacles. The unit is made of aluminum and plastic and comes in white. The brand name and model number are on a label that can be found on the back of the motion sensor.
The firm advises consumers to immediately stop using the recalled Motion Security Lights, turn off power to the unit at the circuit breaker or fuse panel, and contact HeathCo for a free replacement light fixture.
