Crash on N.State Pkwy Kills Port Jefferson Station Man
A Port Jefferson Station man was killed on Wednesday due to a single-vehicle crash on the Northern State Parkway in Dix Hills. Police are investigating the accident, Newsday reports.
According to Newsday, the 81-year-old man was driving a Nissan Altima west in the right lane, west of Exit 42. He lost control of the vehicle just before 5 a.m. and crashed into a tree on the right shoulder. The Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner pronounced him dead at the scene. He was the only person in the car, according to troopers responding at 4:57 a.m.
The man’s family said he was a retired sanitation worker who was also a longtime volunteer with the East Meadow Fire Department. The fire chief said he also did maintenance for the department’s firehouses and buildings.
The weather was icy cold with less than an inch of snow for most of Long Island late Tuesday into Wednesday, Newsday reports. Preliminary reports indicate that the accident was not affected by road conditions, said Trooper Frank Bandiero, a public information officer.
The state Department of Transportation Authorities closed the right lane for almost two hours after the accident. It was reopened at about 7:15 a.m.
