H&P industries, Inc., the parent corporation of Triad Group, has recalled <"https://www.yourlawyer.com/practice_areas/defective_medical_devices">Povidine Iodine Prep Pads because they may be contaminated with a type of bacteria associated with flesh eating bacteria disease, meningitis in newborn infants and pneumonia in patients on ventilators. According to an H&P press release, the iodine prep pad recall is being initiated because an investigation and sampling tests conducted by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, as well as its own investigation, showed the presence of Elizabethkingia meningoseptica.
In the past several months, H&P’s Triad Group subsidiary has issued several massive recalls of alcohol prep pads, alcohol swabs, and alcohol swabsticks sold, as well as lubricating jelly products, sold under various brand names because of potential contamination with the bacteria Bacillus cereus. In February, the parents of a toddler named Triad Group in wrongful death lawsuit after their child died from acute bacterial meningitis following what was supposed to be the routine surgical removal of a benign cyst near his brain. According to the lawsuit, sterile alcohol pads made by Triad Group were used in the surgery, and the family has alleged negligence on the part of the company.
Triad Group faces at least one other lawsuit over the tainted products. As we reported previously, the company also said it was shutting down the production line that made those products, after it was also found to be contaminated.
The newly recalled products include Povidine Iodine Prep Pads made by H&P Industries Inc. and packaged under the names Cardinal Health, Medical Specialties, VHA, Triad, Triad Plus, North Safety and Total Resources. The recalled products were distributed in the United States to healthcare customers and are packaged in individual packets and sold in a box of 100 packets. Povidine Iodine Prep Pads are used to prevent infection in minor cuts, scrapes and burns and are labeled as an antiseptic for preparation of the skin prior to surgery.
According to a report on MSNBC, Elizabethkingia meningoseptica is a bacterium often found in frogs and fish, but rarely linked to human infections. Recently, it has been tied to orthopedic infections caused by tissue from deceased donors.
According to H&P Industries, no adverse events been reported in connections with these contaminated Povidine Iodine Prep Pads.
