We’ve been following the growing issue of potential <"https://www.yourlawyer.com/topics/overview/salmonella">Salmonella contamination in hazelnuts all week and today is no different. Two more firms have recalled hazelnuts due to Salmonella concerns. The recent recalls were announced by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with the Salmonella pathogen often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e. infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis.
Mountain Man Nut & Fruit Company
Mountain Man Nut & Fruit Co. is voluntarily recalling select products containing shelled hazelnuts (filberts) and initiated its recall in conjunction with the prior recall from Kunze Farms because raw hazelnuts could have been exposed to Salmonella and become contaminated. During routine inspection of the hazelnut shelling facility one Salmonella test came back positive. To date, Mountain Man has not received any complaints of consumer illness associated with these products.
Following is a list of the products—and impacted lot codes—manufactured and packaged since November 1, 2009 and December 17, 2009. Mountain Man noted that product purchased before or after these dates should not be affected by this recall:

• Choice Mixed Nuts; 16-ounce bags: 31309, 32709, 33609, 34909
• Dry Roast Mixed Nuts; 16-ounce bags: 30909
• Sweet Simplicity™ Trail Mix: 32909
• Mountain Jubilee® Trail Mix; 8- and 16-ounce bags: 31309, 32409, 33709, 34909
• Cinnamon Almond Appleanche™ Trail Mix: 31009
• Fancy Mixed Nut Gift Pack; 1.75 pound: All product except 35009
• Fancy Mixed Nut Gift Packs; 1-pound: All product except 35009
Mountain Man noted that product with these lot codes could be present as a component in some of its gift baskets, including the 12 Tastes Basket, Bounty Basket, and Half-Pound Sampler Basket. Because all of the products in a gift basket are individually packaged, only the above named products would be subject to this recall. Customers who receive these baskets can bring any of the above products to a distributor or store to receive a replacement product.
The above affected product has only been distributed through Mountain Man Distributors, Retail Stores, and directly through the Mountain Man Web site. Mountain Man product sold in the State of Oregon is not affected by this recall.
Consumers who have purchased the recalled products should return them to their place of purchase for replacement product or a refund. Questions may be directed to the company toll-free at 1-800-225-0045, Monday-Friday between the hours of 7:00 AM and 4:30 PM Mountain Standard Time.
Market of Choice
Market of Choice is recalling bulk and packaged hazelnuts (filberts) processed at Willamette Shelling Inc. for Evonuk Oregon Hazelnuts. The nuts were recalled from seven Market of Choice stores in Oregon on December 17. Willamette Shelling Inc. issued the initial recall because Salmonella was recently found in some of the product processed at its facility. No confirmed illnesses have been reported at this time.
The following products sold between November 2, 2009 and December 16, 2009 have been recalled from Market of Choice stores in Eugene, Ashland, Southwest Portland, and West Linn, Oregon. The recalled products above do not contain any UPC or Lot codes:
