Vega Helmet Corporation has announced that it is recalling more than 30,546 motorcycle helmets that may not meet federal safety standards for impact protection.
The recalled helmets, Vega model XTS in sizes L, XL, and XXL, were manufactured between May 2011 and October 2012, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal’s Driver’s Seat blog. Riders wearing these helmets could face increased risk of injury in a crash. Vega notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that the helmets fail to conform to certain requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 218, which sets out the requirements for materials, proper fit, helmet replacement and care, and manufacturer testing of helmets.
Vega said the problem with the XTS helmets is due to changes to the helmet’s shell and interior made in 2011, according to the Wall Street Journal blog. The company will notify dealers and the public of the recall and will replace the noncompliant helmets free of charge. Owners of the recalled helmets should contact Vega at 425.656.0683.
