Velveeta Skillet Dinner Recalled Over Allergen Not Listed on Label

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) just announced the recall of Kraft Foods Velveeta Cheesy Skillets Singles-Ultimate Cheeseburger Mac product because of misbranding and an undeclared allergen.

Truitt Brothers Inc., of East Bernstadt, Kentucky, has recalled approximately 1.77 million pounds of Kraft Velveeta Cheesy Skillets Singles-Ultimate Cheeseburger Mac. The product contained hydrolyzed soy protein and dried soy sauce–known allergens–which are not declared on some labels, CBSMiami reports.

The skillet dinners were produced between May 6, 2013 and January 16, 2014 and were shipped to Kraft Foods distribution centers and retail locations nationwide, according to CBSMiami. The affected products have a Use By/Sell By date code of 02 March 2014–23 October 2014. The producer discovered the problem during a routine quality check, and the company contacted FSIS. Truitt Brothers believes the problem occurred when a label supplier inadvertently mixed labels with incorrect ingredient lines with labels containing correct ingredient information.

To date, neither FSIS nor the company has received reports of adverse reactions from consuming these products, CBS Miami reports.
