Millions of Gas Cylinder Units have been recalled by Worthington Cylinders for fire hazard, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada (HC) just announced. About 29,026,000 Map Pro, Propylene and MAPP Gas Cylinders have been recalled in the United States; another 1,371,100 units have been recalled in Canada.

The defective Gas Cylinder Units were manufactured in the United States by Worthington Cylinders Wisconsin, LLC, of Chilton, Wisconsin and sold at various plumbing/HVAC distributors, Home Depot, Lowes, and Ace Hardware Stores nationwide and in Canada from October 2004 through January 2012 for about $7 – $13 for cylinders and $45 – 75 for the torch kits.

The seal on the cylinders can leak after torches or other fuel-consuming equipment are disconnected from them, posing a fire hazard. To date, no incidents or injuries have been reported.

The cylinders contain propylene gas and are used for soldering, brazing, and cutting and contain 14.1 ounces of Map-Pro, 14.1 ounces of Propylene, or 16 ounces of Methyl Acetylene Propadiene Stabilized (MAPP). The cylinders are approximately 3 inches in diameter and 11 inches in height, are either yellow or black, and were sold alone and in kits that include a torch and a cylinder. The cylinders and torch kits have a variety of labels. A detail listing can be accessed on the CPSC’s web site.

The firm advises consumers that if the cylinder has never been connected to a torch or other device to use the cylinder and return it to the store where purchased for exchange or full refund.

If in possession of a partially used cylinder currently connected to a torch or other device, consumers are not to disconnect the torch or other device and are advised to take the product outdoors, ignite the torch, burn off all of the cylinder’s content, disconnect the torch from the empty cylinder, and dispose of the empty cylinder in accordance with cylinder label instructions. Consumers can also return the cylinder to the store where purchased for exchange or a full refund.

For partially used cylinders that are not connected to a torch or other device, consumers are advised to take the cylinder outdoors and leak test the top of the cylinder with soapy water. If bubbles develop, attach the torch, ignite the torch, burn off all of the cylinder’s contents, remove the torch from the empty cylinder, and dispose of the empty cylinder following cylinder label instructions, or return the cylinder to the store where purchased for exchange or a full refund. If no bubbles develop, do not use cylinder and return it to the store where it was purchased for exchange or a full refund.

The firm also warns consumers to never leave a lit torch and cylinder unattended and to use the torch only in a well-ventilated area.

Parker Waichman was extremely professional and helpful in handling our WTC case. Benita Rollis, in particular, was amazing in helping us complete all the necessary steps and paper work for our claim. She was always quick to return phone calls and reach out to keep us posted on how things were progressing. Not only was Benita efficient and professional, she was also very compassionate in helping us through the emotional side of this long process. Carolyn Corcoran & Family
