Nursing home abuse neglect
WASHINGTON D.C. — Newsday reported that two Long Island nursing homes appear on a report prepared by the United States Senate that receive federal money yet have a terrible track record. The two Long Island nursing homes are on a list of 400 facilities nationwide that inspectors say are unsanitary or have severe health and safety problems. The U.S. Senate has maintained a tight seal on the identity of the facilities appearing on this list until April of 2019. One of the Long Island nursing homes is no longer appears on the list after rectifying the issues about which inspectors complained. Neither of the Long Island nursing homes appearing on the list was placed on the higher scrutiny list unlike several other facilities from around the country.
One of the two Long Island nursing homes cited in the report has a history of poor performance, along with prior health and safety violations. The second Long Island nursing home was reportedly a candidate for the higher scrutiny list but never made it to that list. Although neither of the homes required tighter focus, both had so-called warning labels according to the Senate report.
The first nursing facility has since rectified the problems previously plaguing the home. That home, which was being monitored as part of a $28 million settlement, produced a confirmatory letter from the New York Department of Health dated March 13, 2019, that indicated the federal authorities no longer had the home on its list because the home showed progress toward complying with all health and safety regulations.
A spokesperson for the other nursing facility from Long Island referenced in the Senate report said that inspections in 2017 and 2019 showed that the facility operates at a higher level than most homes in New York state and nationally. Regulators deemed this nursing home to be in “substantial compliance” with federal and state regulations.
