Acne May Help Protect Men From Heart Disease. In a study of medical records of 11,232 students between 1948 and 1968, whose later health was traced through the National Health Service Registry, researchers from the University of Bristol (UK) found men who reported a history of acne as adolescents were 33% less likely to have died of coronary heart disease than men who had not reported acne.
According to Dr. Bruna Galobardes, androgens (male hormones), which can cause acne in adolescence, and androgen activity are implicated in several health outcomes.
On the negative side, however, is the fact that androgens are associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer. Thus, the study also found that men with earlier cases of acne were at a 67% higher risk of dying from prostate cancer. It is not clear if androgens induce prostate cancer or simply facilitate the growth of existing lesions.
The study is published in the American Journal of Epidemiology.
