A Catholic priest has been arrested for sexually abusing a 12-year-old boy, the Queens district attorney’s office said.
Peter Kiare, 41, was arrested for sexual abuse, forcible touching and endangering the welfare of a child, office spokesman Patrick Clark said Tuesday. Kiare could face up to a year in prison if convicted.
The suspect, who was being held in jail and was unavailable for comment, had not retained a lawyer, the DA’s office said. A telephone message left at the Queens borough church where he preaches was not immediately returned.
Kiare is a member of a religious order of missionary priests based in Ireland called the Holy Ghost Fathers, a law enforcement source familiar with the case told The Associated Press. He came to New York on June 11 from Kenya to preach and raise money for his ministry, said the source, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Kiare was preaching at St. Mary’s Church in Woodside, where he befriended the boy’s family, the source said.
He was arrested Tuesday evening at a residence for priests in Long Island City, according to the source.
The complaint against the priest was to remain sealed until his arraignment, scheduled for Wednesday.
