Tropicana Orange Juice False Claims. For years, Tropicana Products, Inc. (a subsidiary of PepsiCo. Inc.) has implied in its advertising that two to three glasses of “Healthy Heart” orange juice per day would help in lowering blood pressure and provide other clinically proven health benefits. An FTC complaint, however, challenged these claims as being false, misleading, and without scientific support.
Although Tropicana did not admit any violation of law or that the allegations in the FTC complain were true, the company agreed not to make the claims identified in the settlement document “without competent and reliable scientific evidence.” Under that agreement, Tropicana is barred from making claims that “any food will have an effect on the risk of heart disease, stroke or cancer” without the backing of sound scientific evidence.
