Ravioli Recalled Due To Plastic Contamination. The supermarket chain Wegmans recalled ravioli due to white plastic pieces reportedly found in a particular product. The recalled ravioli is Wegmans Italian Classics Striped Ricotta & Spinach Ravioli, 9- ounce, UPC # 0-77890-38934, sold between August 2 and August 30, 2016. Products with a “use by” or “freeze by” date of September 30, 2016 are included in the recall.
The ravioli is produced by O’Sole Mio in Quebec, Canada. It is packaged in a plastic tray and available in a refrigerated case in the dairy department. Approximately 1,638 9-ounce packages of the recalled ravioli were sold in 90 Wegmans stores. The stores are located in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, and Massachusetts. Wegmans assured the public that the recalled products have been removed from store shelves.
Plastic In The Food May Pose Choking Hazard
It has long been known that tiny bits of plastic get into our food from containers. The process is called “leaching” or “migration.” The chemical industry acknowledges that you can’t avoid this transfer noting that all food packaging materials contain substances that can migrate into the food they contact, reports WebMD. However, bits of plastic in the food itself may pose a choking hazard, according to the Food Poisoning Bulletin.
Customers notified Wegmans that white plastic pieces had been found in the product which was what initially instigated the recall.
Currently, there have been no injuries reported associated with the recalled ravioli product.
The voluntary recall instructs customers on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website, to return the affected product to the place of purchase for a full refund.
