HILLSBORO BEACH, FL – According to Wsbradio.com, a man in South Florida was involved in a serious accident that caused his arm to be severed on a construction site. The incident took place on Thursday, November 29, 2018, in Hillsboro Beach.
The worker’s name has not yet been released, but he was identified as a 44-year-old man. According to the Broward County Fire Rescue officials, the victim was operating an industrial auger when he got his right arm stuck in the drill. The drill cut the man’s arm off at the shoulder.
The machine is used to bore holes in the ground. The victim was reportedly in stable condition and remained conscious following the horrific accident. The Hillsboro Beach police have been credited with saving the man’s life. Sergeant Andrew Kirchoff was one of the responders. Officer Kirchoff teaches first aid and CPR at the Hillsboro Police station and was able to apply a tourniquet to the victim and stay with him until the paramedics arrived at the site. The police stated that it was lucky that an officer trained in first aid arrived on the scene.
Reports indicate that the man’s arm might be surgically reattached.
The injured man worked with Dynatech Engineering. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is investigating the accident and the company.
Another construction worker from a nearby site told reports that the incident did not surprise him. He said that “You can never tell them to be careful enough.”
Construction work is one of the most hazardous jobs in the United States and accounts for a large portion of total work-related accidents.
