FDA – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that Arizona Nutritional Supplements is recalling its 13.9-ounce containers of its “365 Everyday Value Whey Protein Powder Natural Vanilla Flavor” due to a potentially “serious or life-threatening situation.” According to the recall announcement made on May 7, 2021, this product was errantly packaged with soy protein powder, which resulted in an “undeclared soy allergen” recall. The product is sold exclusively at Whole Food’s Market grocery stores.
According to the News report posted on miamiherald.com, this similar labeling malfunction from Arizona Nutritional Supplements occurred back in December of 2020. At that time, Whole Foods Market was inundated with negative publicity due to a product that contained undisclosed soy. And this recall, the manufacturer mistakenly included soy protein powder in the whey protein mix. Arizona Nutritional Supplements is Whole Foods Market’s private label manufacturer.
According to the FDA, “individuals with an allergy or sensitivity to soy may risk a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product. “The signs of a mild allergic reaction to soy include itching in around the mouth and hives. Those individuals who have a severe soy allergy could suffer a life-threatening allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. An allergic reaction could occur within a few seconds or minutes after being exposed to an allergen. Anaphylaxis Symptoms include low blood pressure, wheezing, difficulty breathing, a weak pulse, rapid pulse, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, skin reactions, and death.
According to the FDA, any individual who has a sensitivity or allergy to soy should not consume this product to avoid a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. The affected Way protein powder has a UPC number 9948228764 and a “Best By” date of March 4, 2023. The defective whey protein powder has a lot number of 0073984. The recall way protein powder it’s sold exclusively at Whole Foods Market locations throughout the United States. The product was sold between the dates of March 24, 2021, and May 6, 2021.
