A news article posted on medicinenet.com reports that the death of eight babies has provoked the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the Boppy Company to recall over 3 million baby loungers. Last year, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission published a safety warning concerning similar “pillow-like” infant products.
According to the news report, when babies are placed on their side, back, or stomach on the recalled loungers, the infant may suffocate.
CPSC Chairman Robert Adler’s statement in the recall explained that the affected pillow-like products and loungers are not safe for babies to sleep on since there is a risk of suffocation. Chairman Adler also stated that the products were not for babies to sleep on, and suffocation could occur quickly. Therefore, it would be too dangerous for the Boppy lounger products to remain on the market.
One Boppy spokesperson stated in its recall notice that their baby lounger was not marketed as a baby sleep product, and all packaging includes warnings.
This recall involves the following Boppy Newborn Loungers models, the Boppy Preferred Newborn Lounger, the Pottery Barn Kids Boppy Newborn Lounger, and the Boppy Original Newborn Lounger. Parents and caregivers should immediately stop using the infant loungers and contact the company for a full refund.
The loungers were sold from January 2004 through September 2021 at a price of $30 to $44. The affected products were sold in Canada and the United States by brick-and-mortar and online retailers such as Walmart, Target, Amazon, and Pottery Barn Kids, and many others.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends babies sleeping on their backs and on a flat, firm surfaces that is free of restraints, bedding, or padded bumpers.
